Portland Students

Fall Newsletter

At the end of August we headed up north to Portland. Portland is in a very similar situation as Sacramento when it comes to refugee resettlement. The government likes medium sized cities for resettlement.

We have a couple who we are resourcing to reach the Muslim refugees in Portland. They are an incredible couple who are both teachers and have a heart to reach the unreached. Consider helping them reach their financial and prayer partner goals at www.studentreach.org/thehummels .

While in Portland, we held 5-days of life coaching. This is our class that helps refugees learn the tools for success and health, while learning about their new American culture. It also gives them an opportunity to practice English. We had a fantastic response. We started with zero and ended with a BBQ for 40.

Their stories were incredible. One single mother shared with us her life since arriving from Libya only two months ago. She described the mayhem that has engulfed her home since the Arab spring. Describing the people who are causing the unending war as “Addicted to Violence”. She has suffered the loss of many, many who did not or have not made it out like she has. While sharing a meal with us and the other families we worked with that week, her stories shifted from fear to hope. Her expression of gratitude not only for us spending the week with her kids, to learning how to smile again in a safe place, was an encouragement that we were in the right place serving the right people – the refugees of the world arriving to America.

We have such an amazing opportunity to reach these hurting people. We are so happy to be able to be on the forefront of helping Muslim refugees. Thank you for all your support that make it possible.
